Discover the Campania region

The region of Campania is located in southern Italy and borders the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. The region’s name is derived directly from Latin. Indeed, the Romans called the region Campania Felix, which means happy land(s). The capital of Campania is Napoli. In the Middle Ages, the Amalfi Coast, as the west coast is called, was one of the most important trading cities in Europe.

Major cities

The region is divided into five counties, shown below along with other major cities

  • Avellino
  • Benevento
  • Caserta (Avera, Capua)
  • Naples (Pompei, Sorrento, Torre del Greco)
  • Salerno (Amalfi, Positano, Paestum)

Islands

Campania also includes another three islands. Namely, Capri, Ischia and Procida. All can be reached by ferry via the port of Napoli and/or Sorrento.

Regional cuisine

The Romans called this area “the happy Campania. The world’s tastiest tomatoes come from the Campania region. Together with mozzarella and basil that means the recipe for insalata caprese. This is a good example of the typical cuisine in Campania, few resources but optimal results. That is what makes this cuisine especially pure. Pizza and pasta are popular here, but often only with tomato as a base. Neapolitans like to eat robust types of pasta, such as rigatoni (large penne) or cannelloni.
