General information about Campania

Campania is located in southern Italy, on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The region stretches from the Amalfi Coast to inland mountains and volcanic landscapes. The most famous volcano is Mount Vesuvius, which has shaped the area for centuries. The region has a rich history dating back to the Greeks and Romans.

Campania is densely populated and energetic. Life takes place in the streets. Culture and religion are deeply embedded in daily life. At the same time, there are surprisingly quiet places, especially outside the cities. This variety is what makes Campania so fascinating.

Campania’s cuisine is world famous. Pizza originated here. Pasta, seafood and sweet pastries also play a big role. Ingredients are simple and of high quality. Food is an important part of life here.

Trips to Campania

Campania is easily accessible by plane. The main airport is Naples. From here you can easily travel further through the region. Many destinations are a short distance from each other. International train connections also arrive in Naples.

Public transportation is extensive but sometimes chaotic. Trains and subways connect major cities and archaeological sites. For day trips to the coast and inland areas, a car is useful. Allow for heavy traffic in urban areas. Outside the cities, driving is quieter.

Ferries connect the mainland to islands such as Capri and Ischia. This makes island visits easy. Campania is suitable for both city trips and tours.

Regional cuisine

The Romans called this area “the happy Campania. The world’s tastiest tomatoes come from the Campania region. Together with mozzarella and basil that means the recipe for insalata caprese. This is a good example of the typical cuisine in Campania, few resources but optimal results. That is what makes this cuisine especially pure.

Pizza and pasta are popular here, but often only with tomato as a base. Neapolitans like to eat robust types of pasta, such as rigatoni (large penne) or cannelloni.
