This region lies on the Adriatic coast, between Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Abruzzo. Here you will find medieval villages, rolling hills, beautiful beaches and impressive natural parks.

Often seen as the quiet alternative to Tuscany, Le Marche has at least as much charm. In this article you will discover what makes Le Marche so special, which towns to visit and the best way to explore this region.

General information

Le Marche is located in central Italy, on the Adriatic Sea. The region is known for its varied landscape. On one side you will find long sandy beaches and atmospheric seaside resorts. On the other side are green hills, vineyards and rugged mountains.

The region consists of five provinces: Ancona, Pesaro e Urbino, Macerata, Fermo and Ascoli Piceno. Especially the interior is still relatively undiscovered. Here there are dozens of historic villages, often built high on a hill.

What makes Le Marche so special is the combination of nature, culture and gastronomy. You can hike in the mountains of the Sibillini Mountains in the morning and relax on the beach in the afternoon. The local cuisine is another reason to visit this region. Think fresh fish, truffles, olive oil and the famous olives all’ascolana.

Besides, Le Marche still feels truly Italian. You travel here among locals, small family-run businesses and authentic trattorias. That’s exactly what makes a trip through this region so special.

Trips to Le Marche

Le Marche is easily accessible from the Netherlands and Belgium, although the region is even less visited than Tuscany or Lake Garda, for example.

By plane
The main airport is Ancona Falconara Airport. From the Netherlands there are sometimes direct flights, but often you travel via cities such as Rome or Milan. Another option is to fly to Bologna or Rome and continue from there with a rental car. In fact, this is often the most practical choice.

By car
Many travelers choose to drive to Le Marche by car. From the Netherlands, it is about 1300 to 1400 kilometers away. The route is usually via Germany, Switzerland or Austria.

A car is handy in Le Marche anyway. Many beautiful villages and natural areas lie inland and are easiest to reach by private transportation.

By train
The Adriatic coastline has good train connections. Cities such as Ancona, Pesaro and San Benedetto del Tronto are easily accessible by train from Bologna or Rome.

Major cities

Ancona

Ancona is the capital of Le Marche and is located directly on the Adriatic Sea. The city has a long history and an important port. Be sure to visit the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, which sits high above the city and offers a beautiful view of the sea. The old streets in the historic center are also fun to explore.

Urbino

Urbino is one of Italy's most beautiful Renaissance cities and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is best known for the impressive Palazzo Ducale and as the birthplace of painter Raphael. With its narrow streets and historic buildings, Urbino still feels like a Renaissance city.

Ascoli Piceno

Located in the south of Le Marche, Ascoli Piceno is known for its elegant historic center. The heart of the city is Piazza del Popolo, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Here you can sit on a terrace and enjoy the local specialty olive all'ascolana.
