Then Trentino South Tyrol is one of the most beautiful regions of Northern Italy. Located in the Dolomites, this unique region feels both Italian and Austrian at the same time. You’ll find atmospheric cities like Bolzano and Trento, as well as idyllic mountain villages, castles and spectacular hiking areas. On this page you will discover what makes Trentino South Tyrol so special, which cities to visit and what you can do there. So you can perfectly prepare your trip to this impressive region.
Trentino South Tyrol is located in the far north of Italy, against the border with Austria and Switzerland. The region consists of two provinces: Trentino in the south and South Tyrol in the north. Together they form one of the most impressive mountain regions in Europe.
What makes this region so special is the mix of cultures. In Trentino people mainly speak Italian, while in South Tyrol many people speak German. You notice this in everything. From the architecture and cuisine to the place names and traditions.
The region is known for the spectacular Dolomites. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this mountain range attracts hikers, cyclists and winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world every year.
But Trentino South Tyrol has much more to offer than just mountains. You’ll find beautiful lakes like Lago di Molveno and Lago di Carezza, vineyards, castles and atmospheric historic towns.
In winter, the region turns into one of the largest winter sports areas in Europe. In summer, it is a paradise for hikers, nature lovers and road trip fans.
Trentino South Tyrol is about 900 to 1100 kilometers away from the Netherlands. By car it will take you an average of 10 to 12 hours, depending on your point of departure.
Many travelers choose a road trip through Germany and Austria. This route is comfortable and offers beautiful mountain scenery along the way.
Another option is to fly to Verona, Innsbruck or Munich. From there, you can easily travel on to the Dolomites by rental car.
The region is also easily accessible by train. The main stations are Bolzano, Trento and Bressanone. From these cities you can use regional trains and buses to explore the rest of the region.
However, renting a car is recommended. In fact, many of the most beautiful places are in the middle of the mountains and are most easily accessible by private transportation.

Bolzano is the capital of South Tyrol and a lively city where Italian and Austrian influences meet. The historic center is known for its colorful buildings, characteristic arcades and cozy squares. One of the most famous attractions is the South Tyrol Archaeological Museum where you can see the famous ice mummy Ötzi. From the city you can take a cable car to the Ritten plateau for a magnificent view of the Dolomites. Thanks to its combination of culture, gastronomy and nature, Bolzano is an ideal starting point for a trip through Trentino South Tyrol.

Trento is the elegant capital of the province of Trentino and is known for its rich history and beautiful architecture. The historic center consists of atmospheric squares, colorful Renaissance buildings and impressive frescoes on the facades of old palaces. The city's most famous monument is the Castello del Buonconsiglio, an impressive castle that for centuries was the residence of prince bishops. Trento also has a lively atmosphere thanks to its university, cozy restaurants and wine bars where you can taste local wines from the region.

Merano is a charming spa town known for its mild climate, beautiful promenades and green surroundings. In the 19th century, the city was a popular destination for European nobility and you can still see that in its elegant villas and historic buildings. One of the most beautiful places in Merano are the botanical gardens of Schloss Trauttmansdorff where you walk through different gardens and landscapes with views of the mountains. Merano's modern thermal baths are also a popular place to relax after an active day in nature.

Bressanone, also known as Brixen, is one of the oldest towns in Tyrol and has an attractive and compact historic center. The Dom Square forms the heart of the city and is dominated by the impressive cathedral with two towers. In the narrow streets surrounding the square you will find cozy cafes, local stores and traditional restaurants. Just outside the city is the famous monastery Novacella, one of the oldest wine-producing abbeys in the world. Thanks to its location between vineyards and mountains, Bressanone is also a perfect base for hiking in the Dolomites.
