Many travelers choose to fly to Italy and then rent a car. The nearest airports are Rome, Florence and Perugia. From Rome, you can drive to Umbria in about two hours.
A car is actually indispensable in this region. Indeed, the charm of Umbria lies in the small villages, rural roads and hidden places that you can easily reach only by car.
A popular way to explore Umbria is a road trip. You then drive past medieval towns, vineyards and beautiful viewpoints over the green landscape.
Assisi is perhaps the most famous town in Umbria and is beautifully set against the slope of Monte Subasio. The historic center consists of narrow streets, old stone houses and atmospheric squares. The town is known worldwide as the birthplace of Francis of Assisi. The impressive Basilica of St. Francis is therefore the biggest attraction and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Inside you will admire beautiful frescoes by Giotto and other famous artists. Besides the basilica, it is wonderful to stroll through the quiet streets and enjoy the view of the Umbrian landscape.
Perugia is the capital of Umbria and a lively city with an impressive historic center. Located high on a hill, the city has a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys. At the heart of the city is Piazza IV Novembre, where you will find the famous Fontana Maggiore and the Cathedral of Perugia. The city has a rich history dating back to the Etruscans. Today, the university provides a young and energetic atmosphere. Perugia is also known for chocolate and hosts the popular Eurochocolate festival every year that draws visitors from all over Europe.
Orvieto is a spectacular hill town built on a high volcanic rock. Its location alone makes the city special. You reach the historic center via cable car or up a winding road. The absolute highlight of Orvieto is the impressive Duomo, one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy. The facade is richly decorated with mosaics, statues and colorful details. Beneath the city lies a fascinating network of underground tunnels, caves and ancient wells. On a guided tour, you will discover how residents lived and worked here for centuries.
Spoleto is a charming city with a rich history dating back to Roman times. The historic center consists of atmospheric streets, medieval squares and impressive monuments. One of the most famous sights is the Ponte delle Torri, a spectacular medieval bridge that rises high above the valley. Spoleto's cathedral is also worth a visit, with beautiful frescoes by Renaissance artist Filippo Lippi. In summer, the town comes extra alive during the famous Festival dei Due Mondi, an international festival of music, theater and art.
One of Umbria's best-preserved medieval towns, Gubbio feels as if time has stood still here. Set against a hill, the town consists of narrow streets, impressive stone buildings and beautiful squares. Piazza Grande is the heart of the city and offers spectacular views of the valley. Here also stands the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli, the symbol of Gubbio. A small cable car takes you to the top of Monte Ingino for panoramic views of the surrounding area. Gubbio is also known for the Festa dei Ceri, an ancient festival celebrated every year in May.
