Liguria is one of the most beautiful regions of Italy if you love the sea, colorful villages and good food. This narrow coastal strip in northern Italy lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains and is known for the famous Cinque Terre, charming seaside resorts and historic towns.
Many travelers visit Liguria for its spectacular coastline, but the region has much more to offer than just the famous spots. Think attractive ports, hidden beaches, authentic villages and a cuisine where pesto and focaccia take center stage. On this page you will discover what makes Liguria so special, which cities you absolutely must visit and the best way to travel to this beautiful region.
Liguria is located in northwestern Italy and borders France, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. The region consists of a long, narrow coastal strip along the Ligurian Sea and is protected on the landward side by the Apennines and the Alps. This location provides a mild climate with mild winters and warm summers.
The region is known worldwide for the Cinque Terre, but Liguria has many more beautiful places. The coast is often divided into two parts: the Riviera di Ponente in the west and the Riviera di Levante in the east. Both areas have their own character.
The Riviera di Ponente is known for wide beaches, seaside resorts and flower farms. The Riviera di Levante is more rugged and spectacular, with cliffs, colorful villages and small ports. Here you will also find the famous Cinque Terre National Park.
Liguria is also the birthplace of pesto alla genovese. This world-famous sauce is made from basil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic and olive oil. Focaccia, fresh fish and pasta with seafood also play a major role in local cuisine.
Liguria is easily accessible from the Netherlands and Belgium. Depending on your travel style, you can choose car, train or plane.
By car
Many travelers choose a road trip to Liguria. From the Netherlands, you drive to the region in about 11 to 13 hours. The route usually takes you through Switzerland or southern Germany and northern Italy. A car is ideal if you want to explore several places along the coast.
By plane
Liguria’s main airport is in Genoa. You can also fly to Pisa, Milan or Nice in France. From there you can easily travel further by train or rental car.
By train
Italy has an excellent train network. Direct trains run from cities such as Milan, Turin and Pisa to many places in Liguria. Especially along the coast, the train is one of the easiest ways to travel, for example between the villages of the Cinque Terre.

Genoa is the capital of Liguria and a city with a rich maritime history. In the historic center, walk through narrow streets past churches, palaces and lively squares. Visit the cathedral of San Lorenzo, the old port and be sure to taste the original pesto alla genovese and focaccia here.

La Spezia is a lively port city and a popular base for visiting the Cinque Terre. The city has a pleasant promenade, an attractive center and a good train connection to the famous villages along the coast.

Portofino is a small but elegant fishing village known for its colorful houses around the harbor. You can walk here to Castello Brown for stunning views or enjoy an aperitivo on the famous Piazzetta.

Located in western Liguria, Sanremo is known as the flower city of Italy. The town has a beautiful promenade, historic villas and a charming old center full of narrow streets.

Portovenere is an attractive coastal village on the edge of the Cinque Terre. The village is known for its colorful houses, the impressive Doria Castle and the church of San Pietro that sits spectacularly on a rock above the sea.
