General information

Lazio is located in central Italy and borders Tuscany, Umbria and Campania. The landscape is surprisingly diverse. From volcanic lakes and rolling hills to beaches on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The region has a rich history dating back to the Etruscans and the Romans.

Lazio feels authentic and pure. Outside the capital, you’ll find yourself in quiet villages where life is still slow. The cuisine is simple and flavorful. Think pasta carbonara, amatriciana and fresh seasonal produce. This is Italy as many travelers want to experience it.

Travel to Lazio

Lazio is easily accessible. Most travelers fly to Rome’s airport. From there, travel further by train or rental car with ease. Public transportation is well established between the larger cities.

If you also want to explore the countryside and smaller villages, a car is recommended. This way you are flexible and get to places where few tourists come. The best travel time is spring and autumn. Then the climate is pleasant and it is less crowded.

Regional cuisine

Regional cuisine in Lazio is mainly determined by the capital city of Rome. And that, in fact, has long since ceased to be regional. Rome is bursting with different cultures and influences from other parts of Italy and the rest of the world. The Italian dishes spaghetti alla carbonara, spaghetti alla puttanesca and bucattini all’amatriciana are standard on the menu at many trattorie and osterie. All three have their origins in the Lazio region. The Romans also claim to have invented the dish Bruschetta: crusty toasted bread rubbed with garlic and drizzled with extra virgin olive oil.
