General information

Abruzzo is located in central Italy, on the Adriatic Sea, east of Rome. It is one of the greenest regions in Europe. Nearly a third of the area consists of national parks and protected nature. Think of the Gran Sasso massif, vast forests and mountain villages where time seems to stand still.

The region is known for its contrasts. Within an hour you drive from high mountain peaks to the coast. Abruzzo feels authentic and unpolished. That is precisely what makes it so attractive to travelers who want to look beyond Tuscany or Umbria.

The cuisine is simple and flavorful. Lots of meat dishes, sheep cheese, homemade pasta and hearty wines. Arrosticini, small skewers of lamb, are almost sacred here.

Trips to Abruzzo

Abruzzo is surprisingly easy to reach. From the Netherlands and Belgium, fly to Pescara Airport. This is the main airport of the region. From the airport you are quickly by the sea or in the mountains.

Another option is to fly to Rome and rent a car there. From Rome, you can drive to the heart of Abruzzo in about two hours. A car is highly recommended. Many villages and natural areas are only easily accessible by private transportation.

You can also reach parts of Abruzzo by train, especially along the coast. For inland areas, the car remains the most practical.
