It’s party time in Italy today! June 2 is the national holiday of Italia:“la Festa della Repubblica” . This day commemorates the fact that Italy became a republic on June 2, 1946.
Schools and offices are closed, and since it falls on a Thursday this year, many Italians will also take Friday off to make a long weekend of it. Or, as the Italians say, a ponte.
Festivities
Festivities can be found all over Italy today. One of the highlights of this national celebration is Le Frecce Tricolori, the tricolor arrows, in Rome. It is the nickname of the group Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale, which is part of the military air force. Every year on June 2, they fly through the air with ten planes, nine of them in formation and one solo. They perform a beautiful air show, displaying the colors of the Italian flag. Other activities to attend in Rome include the opening of the Quirinale Gardens and attending a large military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali.
