The Basilica of the Addolorata is best known for the alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary. In 1888, according to tradition, Mary appeared to two shepherdesses on a hill near Castelpetroso. They saw her as ‘Our Lady of Sorrows,’ with the crucified Jesus in her arms. This miracle soon attracted the attention of locals and religious authorities, making Castelpetroso an important place of pilgrimage.
In the years that followed, the fame of the apparitions spread throughout Italy and beyond. This holy place offers believers a chance to pray, reflect and find spiritual solace.
The Basilica of Maria Santissima Addolorata was designed in neo-Gothic style by architect Francesco Gualandi. Construction began in 1890 and took more than 80 years, resulting in a unique blend of architectural elements.
